Openreach

1.2 million premises to be added to fibre footprint
99 new exchanges added to the list
Further work to be carried out in previously announced areas

BT has revealed the details of the latest phase of its £2.5 billion commercial roll-out of fibre broadband. A further 1.2million premises will be passed with the technology under this phase, bringing the total footprint announced by the company to date to around 19 million premises.

Openreach, BT’s local network business, will upgrade 99 new exchanges with the technology before or during Spring next year. These exchanges serve approximately 600,000 premises which are mostly spread across Scotland, the Midlands, the North East and North West of England 1 . An additional 600,000 premises will also gain access to fibre broadband as a result of additional ‘infill’ work in previously announced areas.

BT has now confirmed around 1,700 exchange areas across the UK which will make up the bulk of its commercial fibre footprint. The company is now beginning to identify additional exchanges that it will enable with the assistance of its Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) partners.

Mike Galvin, Managing Director, NGA, Openreach, said: “The UK is making great progress with super-fast broadband and this latest phase of work will keep up the momentum. Speeds are increasing all the time with the UK second only to Japan within the G8 2 . I am sure that communities across the UK will be pleased to see that they are factored into our commercial plans and I now look forward to working with councils to identify further areas that we can enable with their support.”

“Our fibre deployment continues to gather pace. Our engineers are working round the clock to hit our ambitious target of reaching two thirds of UK premises with fibre during Spring 2014 – at least eighteen months ahead of the original timetable. The work doesn’t stop there however as we are also helping to roll out fibre to other parts of the country working in partnership with local authorities as part of the BDUK activity.”

BT’s commercial fibre network is already the largest in the UK, reaching more than 13 million premises. When complete, BT’s engineers will have installed tens of thousands of fibre cabinets, enabled around 1,700 exchanges and laid more than 50,000 kilometres of fibre cables across the country.

Openreach, BT’s local network business, is deploying a mix of fibre-based technologies. This includes fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) technology, where the fibre runs from the exchange to a local roadside cabinet. FTTC offers download speeds of up to 80Mbps and upload speeds of up to 20Mbps and could deliver even faster speeds in the future 3 . Fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) technology, where the fibre runs all the way to the home or business, is also being deployed in certain areas. FTTP will offer the top current download speed of 330Mbps 4. According to the regulator Ofcom, the current average UK broadband speed is 9Mbps.

From Spring 2013, Openreach will also start to make FTTP (aka Fibre on Demand) commercially available on demand in areas where FTTC has been deployed .

At home, fibre broadband enables a family to simultaneously download a movie, watch a TV replay service, surf the internet and play games online all at the same time. A whole album can be downloaded in less than 30 seconds and a feature length HD movie in less than 10 minutes, whilst high-resolution photos can be uploaded to Facebook in seconds.

Fibre broadband now available to ten million premises

BT Press Releases

DC12-137                                                                May 10, 2012

Fibre broadband now available to ten million premises

BT has announced it has passed a significant milestone as it revealed its fibre broadband service is now available to ten million premises across the UK. BT was due to pass that milestone by the end of 2012 so it is several months ahead of schedule.

BT is investing £2.5 billion to make fibre broadband available to around two thirds of UK premises by the end of 2014 and has recruited hundreds of extra engineers in the past year to help with the roll-out.

BT’s investment is set to boost the UK economy and support the creation of tens of thousands of new jobs. Small businesses in particular are set to benefit from the much faster speeds on offer as has already been shown in Northern Ireland where fibre broadband is currently available to 89 per cent of homes and businesses thanks to a partnership between BT and the Department of Trade, Enterprise and Investment.

BT believes it is possible to replicate the success of Northern Ireland in the UK mainland with the help of Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) funds. BT is bidding for these funds in each region of the UK and has said it is prepared to invest further funds should it be successful in winning them. BT has already been chosen as the preferred BDUK supplier in Rutland, has won the bid in Lancashire and is bidding in other parts of the UK.

A 90 per cent fibre footprint would ensure the UK is a European leader in superfast broadband as homes and businesses across the UK would have access to speeds of up to 80Mbps (the current average speed in the UK is 7.6Mbps). BT is also set to make fibre-to-the-premises broadband available on demand in all fibre enabled areas from Spring 2013 thereby ensuring homes and businesses can benefit from speeds of 300Mbps and above and potentially a lot more in the future.

BT chief executive Ian Livingston added: “Our engineers have worked tirelessly this past year and BT has made a real commitment to the UK’s infrastructure. Rolling out fibre is no easy task and so to have passed ten million premises in such a short time is fantastic. Our roll-out is one of the fastest in the world and our engineers deserve lots of credit.

“The UK is making great progress with fibre broadband. There are more than half a million customers already using the service. This is a significant achievement given we only began selling services a couple of years ago. Momentum is building in the market and that can only be good for Broadband Britain. We already compare very well to other major European economies and given our plans, the UK can sprint ahead in the future.”

More than 24,000 local householders and firms served by the Battersea exchange are poised to join the high-speed revolution as engineers complete the local upgrades in the coming weeks.

This latest development will help take the number of premises in London with access to the high-speed technology to more than 2.5 million by the end of the year.

BT Openreach, expects to make super-fast fibre broadband available to around two-thirds of UK homes and businesses by the end of 20141. It will use a mix of fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) and fibre to the premises (FTTP) technologies. Both offer speeds much faster than those currently available to many UK homes and businesses.

FTTC, where fibre is delivered to the street cabinet, offers download speeds of up to 80Mbps and upload speeds of up to 20Mbps2. FTTP, where fibre runs all the way to homes and businesses, currently offers download speeds of 110Mbps and these are expected to be boosted to 330Mbps this Spring2.

By Spring 2013 BT aims to make speeds of 330Mbps2 commercially available in any area where super-fast fibre broadband has been deployed, potentially transforming the competitiveness of businesses.3

Chet Patel, BT’s London regional director, said: “The arrival of super-fast broadband is a huge boost for local businesses and households. These are economically challenging times and super-fast broadband can transform their experience of the internet. They’re joining more than seven million UK premises which are now passed by one of the world’s fastest growing fibre networks.

“Fast and reliable internet connections are an essential part of our national infrastructure, whether we want them for boosting our businesses, delivering essential public services , education online or entertainment at home. Nobody is doing more than BT to roll-out faster broadband across the capital, and we want to go further.

“Local authorities and business organisations are keen to get fibre broadband to as many local homes and businesses as possible. We will offer our help and assistance to make that happen, in tandem with our own plans to boost speeds in general.

“Internet users with a super-fast connection can do much more online, all at the same time. Upload speeds are the fastest in the UK and can deliver a major boost to the competitiveness of local businesses, offering them new ways of working flexibly and allowing large data and video files to be sent and received almost instantly. Other benefits include wider use of high quality videoconferencing and faster back-up of computer systems.”

At home a family could be simultaneously downloading a movie, watching a TV replay service, surfing the internet and playing games online. A music track can be downloaded in about two seconds, a whole album in 30 seconds and a feature length HD movie in 10 minutes, whilst high-resolution photos can be uploaded to Facebook in seconds.

Notes

1 BT’s deployment plans are subject to an acceptable environment for investment.

2 These are the top wholesale speeds available from Openreach to all service providers; speeds offered by service providers may vary.

3 Openreach will levy an installation charge for FTTP on demand.

Due to the current network topography, and the economics of deployment, it is likely that some premises within the selected exchange areas will not initially be able to access fibre-based broadband. However, Openreach is actively looking at alternative solutions for these locations.

BT Infinity 2 downstream speeds roughly double to up to 76Mbps

BT Infinity 2 offers UK’s fastest upstream speeds of up to 19Mbps *1

BT Infinity 1 upstream speeds to be up to five times faster than before

BT Retail has turned up the speed dial in the broadband battle by announcing a range of speed increases for its customers for no extra cost. Customers signing up to BT Infinity 2 from April 12 will benefit from downstream speeds that are roughly double those on offer today – up to 76Mbps rather than up to 38Mbps. The newly revamped service will also offer the UK’s fastest upstream speeds of up to 19Mbps.

BT Retail is also set to give the BT Infinity 1 product a boost by increasing its upstream speed fivefold from up to 1.9Mbps to up to 9.5Mbps. With a downstream speed of up to 38Mbps, this service will compare very well with the 30Mbps service offered by Virgin Media given the upstream speeds will be considerably faster than those offered by the latter.

Delivery of the new increased speeds by BT Retail will help to achieve the government’s stated ambition for the UK to have the best super-fast broadband network in Europe by 2015. The high upstream speeds will also be of great benefit to customers who wish to upload photos, video, graphics or other rich content.

From April 12 customers new to BT and existing BT customers switching to BT Infinity from other packages will automatically benefit from these higher speed packages.

Current BT Infinity customers will be able to switch to the faster products by starting a new contract, at no extra cost.

Nearly 21,000 more Lancashire homes and businesses to benefit from BT’s rollout

Super-fast broadband is now available to the first homes and businesses in Lancaster, BT has just announced.

Nearly 21,000 local householders and firms are poised to join the high-speed revolution as engineers complete the local upgrades in the coming weeks.

It is already available in Ashton-on-Ribble, Broughton, Chorley, Fulwood, Leyland, Longton, Penwortham, Rossendale, Skelmersdale and Upholland.

The latest development will take the number of premises in Lancashire with access to the high-speed technology to around 140,000.

Further major investment is under way; BT has announced plans for its super-fast fibre network to pass premises in Accrington, Bamber Bridge, Cleveleys, Clitheroe, Hesketh Bank, Morecambe, Ormskirk and Preston later this year.

The communications company’s local network business, Openreach, expects to make super-fast fibre broadband available to around two-thirds of UK homes and businesses by the end of 2014**. It will use a mix of fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) and fibre to the premises (FTTP) technologies. Both offer speeds much faster than those currently available to many UK homes and businesses.

FTTC, where fibre is delivered to the street cabinet, offers download speeds of up to 40Mbps and upload speeds of up to 10Mbps. Openreach recently announced it will roughly double these speeds this Spring. FTTP, where fibre runs all the way to homes and businesses, currently offers download speeds of up to 100Mbps and these too, are expected to be soon boosted to up to 300Mbps this Spring. By Spring 2013 BT aims to make speeds of up to 300Mbps commercially available in any area where super-fast fibre broadband has been deployed potentially transforming the competitiveness of businesses.*

Lancashire County Council recently announced it had chosen BT as its preferred partner organisation to roll out super-fast broadband to the more remote parts of the county where it is currently not commercially viable to do so. More details about these plans will be announced shortly. Mike Blackburn, BT’s North West regional director, said: “The arrival of super-fast broadband in Lancaster is a huge boost for local businesses and households. These are economically challenging times and super-fast broadband can transform their experience of the internet. They’re joining the more than seven million UK premises now passed by one of the world’s fastest growing fibre networks.

“Fast and reliable internet connections are an essential part of our national infrastructure, whether we want them for boosting our businesses, delivering essential public services , education online or entertainment at home. Nobody is doing more than BT to roll-out faster broadband across the region and we want to go further.

“Internet users with a super-fast connection can do much more online, all at the same time. A music track can be downloaded in about two seconds, a whole album in 30 seconds and a feature length HD movie in 10 minutes, whilst high-resolution photos can be uploaded to Facebook in seconds.

*An installation charge may apply to any businesses or consumers wishing to take advantage of the 300MB on demand product.

** BT’s deployment plans are subject to an acceptable environment for investment.

Due to the current network topography, and the economics of deployment, it is likely that some premises within the selected exchange areas will not initially be able to access fibre-based broadband. However, Openreach is actively looking at alternative solutions for these locations.

BT holds successful trial of “FTTP on demand” and sets timeframe for doubling of FTTC broadband speeds

BT has announced it has held successful trials of “FTTP on demand” in St Agnes, Cornwall. This solution allows additional fibre to be run on demand to a home or business in a Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) enabled area, providing the customer with ultra-fast Fibre to the Premise (FTTP) broadband.

Previously, FTTP speeds weren’t possible in FTTC enabled areas but BT has developed a solution that takes advantage of the fibre it has already deployed between the exchange and the street cabinet.

The technological development has the potential to transform the UK broadband landscape. This is because FTTP – which will soon offer end users speeds of up to 300Mbps – could be made available anywhere in BT’s fibre footprint where a customer requires it. BT will conduct further trials of FTTP on demand this Summer with a view to making the service commercially available by Spring 2013.

The service – which also delivers fast upstream speeds – is likely to be of particular appeal to small and medium size businesses who need to send and receive large amounts of data. The feedback from businesses in St Agnes has been excellent.

BT also said it will introduce a new faster variant of FTTC broadband this Spring. This service will deliver speeds that are approximately double those on offer today so downstream speeds will be up to 80Mbps rather than up to 40Mbps. Upstream speeds will also be faster at up to 20Mbps.

Both announcements came as BT revealed more than seven million premises can now access fibre broadband over its network. This figure will rise to ten million in 2012 and then to around two thirds of UK premises by the end of 2014. BT wants to go further and believes it is possible to make fibre broadband available to more than 90% of UK premises by working with local councils and devolved governments. BT is bidding for Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) funds to make that happen.

Openreach chief executive Olivia Garfield said: “FTTP on demand is a significant development for Broadband Britain. Essentially, it could make our fastest speeds available wherever we deploy fibre. This will be welcome news for small businesses who may wish to benefit from the competitive advantage that such speeds provide.

“We are also doubling the speed of our standard fibre broadband this Spring giving ISPs the chance to offer speeds of up to 80Mbps. This will ensure that residential customers have world class speeds for all their family’s needs.”
